Getting Started

This guide will help you navigate and use the M-580 Federal Land Units Map.

Accessing the Map

The map is available in two versions:

MapLibre Open MapLibre Map WebGL-capable browser with GPU

Remote Access

If you're accessing the map via a remote VM or connection without GPU support, use the Leaflet version for best compatibility.

Interface Overview

The application consists of three main components:

1. Sidebar (Left Panel)

The sidebar contains:

  • Header: Course title and subtitle
  • Search Box: Type to filter units by name
  • Agency Filters: Click buttons to filter by agency type
  • Unit List: Scrollable list of all land units and offices
  • Footer: Link to official M-580 course information

2. Map View (Main Area)

The interactive map displays:

  • Polygon boundaries for National Forests, Parks, Reservations, and Regions
  • Point markers for District Offices, Regional Offices, and facilities
  • Base map showing roads, cities, and terrain

3. Legend (Bottom Right)

Color-coded legend explaining the map symbology:

Basic Navigation

Pan and Zoom

  • Pan: Click and drag the map
  • Zoom In: Scroll up, double-click, or use + button
  • Zoom Out: Scroll down or use - button
  • Reset View: Refresh the page

Selecting a Unit

You can select a unit in two ways:

  1. Click on the sidebar list - The map will fly to that unit
  2. Click directly on the map - The sidebar will highlight that unit

When a unit is selected:

  • The map zooms to fit the unit boundaries
  • A popup appears with unit details
  • The sidebar item is highlighted with a green border

Mobile Usage

On mobile devices:

  • The sidebar is hidden by default
  • Tap the hamburger menu (☰) to open the sidebar
  • The sidebar closes automatically when you select a unit
